Phonics

At Lodge Farm we follow the Little Wandle Letters and sounds scheme.

• We teach whole class phonic lessons daily which last for 30 minutes.

• Each lesson has a clear structure which all staff have been trained to follow.

• A new sound will be taught each day and any children who are falling behind will be identified quickly and will be put into ‘keep up sessions’ to ensure they are given support to keep up with the programme.

• We assess children every half term to determine graphemes and phonemes the children need additional support with.

• By the end of year 1 all children will have been exposed to the full phonetic code they need to ensure they can read.

• We aim for children to be keen, confident readers as they move into year 2.

• In year 2 children begin to learn about different spelling rules.
